This full-day excursion outside of Bangkok is a wonderful way to maximize your time to experience the amazing floating markets of Thailand as well as Kanchanaburi, home to the bridge made even more famous by the Hollywood movie starring Alec Guiness, The Bridge on the River Kwai.
Your journey commences with a leisurely drive from Bangkok, passing through salt fields and rice paddies before embarking aboard your long tail speed-boat on your journey to the floating markets. The floating markets are a fascinating experience, a complete contrast to how we shop for food in the west, and are made up of Thai style canoes laden with colorful and succulent fruits, vegetables, sweets and meats - gently plying their way through the canal, selling as they go. It is one of most popular Thai sightseeing experiences and not to be missed. If you want to take a closer look your local Thai guide will help you organize a local boat ride through the markets (optional extra).
You will then board your coach for the journey west to Kanchanaburi, home to the River Kwai and it's infamous bridge. The building of the bridge in 1943 was part of a wartime project to link existing Thai and Burmese railway lines to create a direct route from Bangkok, Thailand to Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar) in an effort to support the Japanese occupation of Burma. Over 100,000 conscripted laborers and 12,000 prisoners of war died during the whole project. Lunch will be taken at a local restaurant before visiting the bridge after which a visit is made to the new Thailand - Burma War Museum which is adjacent to the War Grave Cemetery. Combining the two attractions unfortunately means there is not enough time to take a train ride, before your journey back to Bangkok and your hotel.

This private tour will drive through a corridor of beautiful Gum trees to the quiet old capital of the 7th century Haripunchai Empire. Lamphun, formerly Haripunchai, situated 16 miles to the south of Chiang Mai, is amongst the oldest cities in Thailand and predates Chiang Mai by several centuries. Northern Thai chronicles suggest that the city of Haripunchai was founded by some Buddhist monks in 661 AD, but the actual date may have been as late as the mid-ninth century. Visits are made to two temples of Lamphun, which are among the finest in the region, the 12th century: WAT PHRA THAT HARIPUNCHAI, which has two beautiful old chedi's in the original Haripunchai style. The tallest chedi is 150 feet high and is topped by a nine-tier umbrella made of 14lb of gold, and WAT CHAMADEVI, dates back at least to the 10th century and was built by the Mons. The main pagoda has five levels, on each of which twelve standing Buddhas are set in attitudes of blessing. The top of Pagoda was once covered with gold but this has since disappeared, hence the temple’s popular name Wat Ku Kut (Topless Pagoda). Another stop is made at the local market before heading back to Chiang Mai.

Leave for Mae Kampong village, a perfect destination to experience the unspoiled beauty of nature by 4WD through Chiang Mai’s picturesque countryside. A stop will be made at a local market. You will have a chance to buy ingredients for a self cooked dinner at the village in the afternoon. You will be welcomed by local villager and can take a glimpse at their unique lifestyle while taking in beautiful scenery. The village is 1,300 meters above sea level with an average temperature of 10-18 C throughout the year. Upon arrival you will walk through the community forest, where the villagers grow tea and coffee, to see how they preserve their forest and how they live in harmony with nature. It is a good example for the King’s self sufficient economy theory. Picnic lunch will be provided at a waterfall. After lunch you will return to the village to relax with a 1 hour Thai traditional massage. Then walk around the village to witness fermented tea leaves process, hand made products. Then it is time to enjoy preparing and cooking your dinner with local people in their house. Return to Chiang Mai, arriving back at your hotel at about 7.30pm.
