Private Bangkok Temples Tour including reclining Buddha at Wat Pho

Private Bangkok Temples Tour including reclining Buddha at Wat Pho

Thailand is predominantly a Buddhist country with around 95% of Thai's practicing the Theravada discipline of Buddhism. As you wander the streets of Bangkok it is not unusual to see monks walking along the road and it should come as no surprise as Thailand has over 26,000 wat's (the local name for temple).

On this privately guided half-day guided tour you will visit three of the most famous wat's in Bangkok - Wat Traimit, Wat Pho and Wat Benchamabophit. A Wat is a Buddhist building where both men and women can be ordained as monks or nuns.

Wat Traimit is also known as the temple of the Golden Buddha. The 3 meter tall statue is made from solid gold and weighs 5.5 tons and is a fine example of Sukhothai style art. You will then pass through Chinatown on your way to Wat Pho, the temple of the reclining Buddha. At 46 meters in length and 15 meters high the Buddha is the largest in Bangkok and illustrates the passing of the Buddha into nirvana. Your last stop is at Wat Benchamabophit, or the marble temple. This magnificent monastery was built out of white Italian marble from Carrara in the late 19th century.

Note: Wat Trimit will be closed for renovations from September 9 - December 9, 2008. Wat Trimit will be replaced with a visit to Suthat Thepwararam during this time.

Wat Suthat Thepwararam was founded at the centre of Rattanakosin island and is one of Thailand’s six most important temple. Construction was according to the Treatise on warfare. King Rama the 1st wished to make it the central temple of Bangkok and building started in 1807. Construction was completed according to plan in the reign of King Rama VII. Good planning from the beginning earned it praise as “the most finely proportioned temple”.

Lamphun Haripunchai Tour from Chiang Mai

Lamphun Haripunchai Tour from Chiang Mai

This tour will begin by drive through a corridor of beautiful Gum trees to the quiet old capital of the 7th century Haripunchai Empire. Lamphun, formerly Haripunchai, situated 16 miles to the south of Chiang Mai, is amongst the oldest cities in Thailand and predates Chiang Mai by several centuries. Northern Thai chronicles suggest that the city of Haripunchai was founded by some Buddhist monks in 661 AD, but the actual date may have been as late as the mid-ninth century.

Visits are made to two temples of Lamphun, which are among the finest in the region, the 12th century: WAT PHRA THAT HARIPUNCHAI, which has two beautiful old chedi's in the original Haripunchai style. The tallest chedi is 150 feet high and is topped by a nine-tier umbrella made of 14lb of gold, and WAT CHAMADEVI, dates back at least to the 10th century and was built by the Mons. The main pagoda has five levels, on each of which twelve standing Buddhas are set in attitudes of blessing. The top of Pagoda was once covered with gold but this has since disappeared, hence the temple’s popular name Wat Ku Kut (Topless Pagoda).

Another stop is made at the local market before heading back to Chiang Mai.

Private Thai Burma Death Railway Bridge on the River Kwai Tour

Private Thai Burma Death Railway Bridge on the River Kwai Tour

There's a kaleidoscope of experiences awaiting you when you visit the Bridge on River Kwai on this private excursion. Fascinating, nostalgic and memorable sums up this full day tour to Kanchanaburi, 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of Bangkok. The province itself is an agricultural area with sugar cane, rice paddies and pineapple plantations all forming significant portions of the stunning Thai rural landscape. Whether a war buff or rail enthusiast, everyone has a different reason to see this symbolic bridge.

The famous bridge and the beginning of the 'Death Railway', which lies 1 mile outside the town of Kanchanaburi, is a poignant reminder of the thousands of POW’s and forced laborers who lost their lives in the Second World War. The building of the bridge in 1943 was one part of a huge Japanese wartime project to link existing Thai and Burmese railway lines to create a direct route from Bangkok, Thailand to Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar) in an effort to support the Japanese occupation of Burma. Thousands of POW's and laborers died in the process. During your tour a visit will be made to one of the Allied War Grave cemeteries (often an emotional experience) before visiting the JEATH war museum, which houses pictures and paintings from this period.

An exhilarating long tailed speed boat ride will then take you down river to the famous bridge itself where you have ample time to explore at your own leisure. A ride on a local train is also included before returning to Bangkok city.
