With the Grand Palace complex and various other temples attracting most of the attention of sightseers in Bangkok it is easy to overlook two other remarkable buildings that are definitely worth visiting. If you appreciate Thai architecture - or even if you don’t - a private tour will help you to learn more about two of the finest examples of Thai residences today - Jim Thompson's house and the Vimanmek Teak Mansion (also known as the Vimanmek Palace). Your privately guided half-day tour begins with a tour of Jim Thompson’s house. Jim Thompson, an American who returned to live in Thailand after World War II (he found New York City tame after many years in Bangkok!), is known as the man who put the Thai silk industry on the global stage. A visit to his beautifully built Thai house, preserved as a museum complete with his personal belongings, showcases his passion for Thai arts and culture. The house was constructed from different parts of various derelict houses in central Thailand and contains a fabulous collection of paintings and Asian artifacts. In 1967 Jim Thompson mysteriously disappeared in the Cameron Highlands (Malaysia) which has only added to his legend. Built in the early 1900’s the Vimanmek Palace is the former home of King Rama V and is made entirely of golden teak wood, the largest of it’s kind in the world. Once inside the 3 story, L-shaped palace the regal opulence is evident as you browse through its 81 rooms, many of which house priceless Thai antiques and opulent collections. This tour will begin by drive through a corridor of beautiful Gum trees to the quiet old capital of the 7th century Haripunchai Empire. Lamphun, formerly Haripunchai, situated 16 miles to the south of Chiang Mai, is amongst the oldest cities in Thailand and predates Chiang Mai by several centuries. Northern Thai chronicles suggest that the city of Haripunchai was founded by some Buddhist monks in 661 AD, but the actual date may have been as late as the mid-ninth century. Visits are made to two temples of Lamphun, which are among the finest in the region, the 12th century: WAT PHRA THAT HARIPUNCHAI, which has two beautiful old chedi's in the original Haripunchai style. The tallest chedi is 150 feet high and is topped by a nine-tier umbrella made of 14lb of gold, and WAT CHAMADEVI, dates back at least to the 10th century and was built by the Mons. The main pagoda has five levels, on each of which twelve standing Buddhas are set in attitudes of blessing. The top of Pagoda was once covered with gold but this has since disappeared, hence the temple’s popular name Wat Ku Kut (Topless Pagoda). Another stop is made at the local market before heading back to Chiang Mai. Duration of Tour: 3 hours
