Chao Phraya River and Bangkok Waterways Cruise including Wat Arun

Chao Phraya River and Bangkok Waterways Cruise including Wat Arun

Cruise by a motorized boat along the Chao Phraya River and canals on the West side of Bangkok to experience the life along the river and canals. This is an intriguing area of Bangkok, especially the Orchid area, that few ever see.

Your cruise along Bangkok's Chao Phraya river will stop at the Temple of Dawn, or Wat Arun, which is one of the city's most famous landmarks. Located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya river, Wat Arun is among the most famous of the more than 400 Buddhist temples and monasteries in the city. The most attractive structure in this temple is the 260 feet high pagoda, or Phra Prang, which is completely covered with pieces of multi-colored glass and Chinese porcelain. If time permits we will walk to the upper levels where you will take in a panoramic view of the surrounding city.

Cruising on you will stop at the Royal Barge Museum, where nine of the most important barges are housed in this national museum, including Suphannahongsa and Narai Song Suban Rama IX. The tradition of royal barges dates back to Ayutthaya times, when they were used to transport the Kings in various ceremonies and processions. These barges were rebuilt by the early Chakri kings in Bangkok to the original specifications. Most were badly damaged during World War II. However, the present King not only had them all restored to their former glory, but revived the ancient tradition of a water-borne Royal Kathin Procession to present robes to monks at the end of the Buddhist Rains Retreat.

Private Floating Markets and Bridge on River Kwai Tour from Bangkok

This privately guided, full-day excursion out of Bangkok is a wonderful way to maximize your time to experience the amazing floating markets of Thailand as well as Kanchanaburi, home to the bridge made even more famous by the Hollywood movie starring Alec Guiness, The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Your journey commences with a leisurely drive from Bangkok, passing through salt fields and rice paddies before embarking aboard your long tail speed-boat on your journey to the floating markets. The floating markets are a fascinating experience, a complete contrast to how we shop for food in the west, and are made up of Thai style canoes laden with colorful and succulent fruits, vegetables, sweets and meats - gently plying their way through the canal, selling as they go. If you want to take a closer look your local Thai guide will help you organize a local boat ride through the markets (optional extra).

You will then board your coach for the journey west to Kanchanaburi, home to the River Kwai and it’s infamous bridge. The building of the bridge in 1943 was part of a wartime project to link existing Thai and Burmese railway lines to create a direct route from Bangkok, Thailand to Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar) in an effort to support the Japanese occupation of Burma. Over 100,000 conscripted laborers and 12,000 prisoners of war died during the whole project.

Lunch will be taken at a local restaurant before visiting the bridge after which a visit is made to the new Thailand - Burma War Museum which is adjacent to the War Grave Cemetery. Combining the two attractions unfortunately means there is not enough time to take a train ride, before your journey back to Bangkok and your hotel.

As you wander the streets of Bangkok it is not unusual to see monks walking along the road and it should come as no surprise as Thailand has over 26,000 wat's (the local name for temple).

On this half-day guided tour you will visit three of the most famous wat's in Bangkok - Wat Traimit, Wat Pho and Wat Benchamabophit. A Wat is a Buddhist building where both men and women can be ordained as monks or nuns.

Wat Traimit is also known as the temple of the Golden Buddha. The 3 meter tall statue is made from solid gold and weighs 5.5 tons and is a fine example of Sukhothai style art. You will then pass through Chinatown on your way to Wat Pho, the temple of the reclining Buddha. At 46 meters in length and 15 meters high the Buddha is the largest in Bangkok and illustrates the passing of the Buddha into nirvana. Your last stop is at Wat Benchamabophit, or the marble temple. This magnificent monastery was built out of white Italian marble from Carrara in the late 19th century.

Note: Wat Trimit will be closed for renovations from September 9 - December 9, 2008. Wat Trimit will be replaced with a visit to Suthat Thepwararam during this time.

Wat Suthat Thepwararam was founded at the centre of Rattanakosin island and is one of Thailand’s six most important temple. Construction was according to the Treatise on warfare. King Rama the 1st wished to make it the central temple of Bangkok and building started in 1807. Construction was completed according to plan in the reign of King Rama VII. Good planning from the beginning earned it praise as “the most finely proportioned temple”.
